Bersin Book Shows How to Measure Corporate Training

Bersin and Associates, a research and advisory firm focused on enterprise learning and talent management, today announced the availability of "The Training Measurement Book: Best Practices, Proven Methodologies, and Practical Approaches." Written by Josh Bersin, president of Bersin and Associates, the book examines the principles of training measurement and explores why and how to measure training.

According to Bersin, it is difficult, if not impossible, to align and improve the business effectiveness of training investments without a measurement strategy. Yet Bersin & Associates research shows that fewer than 10% of corporate training organizations have an ongoing process for measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of training investments. The upshot is that many companies spend millions of dollars on training without any correlation to business impact.

The Training Measurement Book offers managers, executives, and training and human resource professionals a method for measuring their investments in a way that provides information that is actionable, credible, and meaningful to corporate leaders and business unit managers. Using the methods outlined by Bersin, readers can put in place pragmatic, useful, and easy-to-implement approaches for measuring training activities.

“In this book, Josh Bersin effectively tackles the hotly debated of area of training measurement, considered by many a topic shrouded in conceptual and statistical complexity,” said Dr. Vince Eugenio, vice president of human resources and enterprise learning solutions for Cardinal Health. “He takes a refreshingly clear and simple look at how to effectively measure the impact of training.”

The book examines the nine measurement areas that comprise the Impact Measurement Framework, details the seven-step training measurement process, and identifies best-practices, tips, and techniques that make training measurement practical and meaningful. In addition, the book discusses the use of tools, technologies, and systems that can make training measurement more efficient and ultimately more effective. The Training Measurement Book also contains illustrative case studies, examples, and an in-depth discussion of the topic of training analytics, to clearly show how organizations have implemented these measurement programs.

“For three years straight, almost all of the training managers we’ve surveyed have rated measurement as a top area for improvement,” said Bersin. “Yet while they know it’s important, few have measurement programs in place. Practitioners are typically frustrated by a range of common problems -- including a lack of data and resources, an emphasis on ROI metrics, and confusion about the most meaningful measurements. It’s clear that new approaches are needed. My goal with this book is to clarify and simplify the topic with practical ways to implement a training measurement program,” he added.

The Training Measurement Book costs $50 and is available for purchase at Amazon (www.amazon.com), Barnes and Noble (www.bn.com) and Books-a-Million (www.bamm.com). Bersin is also the author of The Blended Learning Book (Pfeiffer, 2004).
